Unit conversion translates a measurement from one unit to another within the same physical quantity — metres to kilometres, Celsius to Fahrenheit, litres to gallons and more.

Why conversion matters

  • Travel — speed limits and distances abroad.
  • Cooking — volume and weight in recipes.
  • Fitness — body weight in kg vs lb.
  • Real estate — square feet vs square metres.
  • Engineering homework — SI vs imperial systems.

How conversion works

Most units convert through a base unit:

  1. Convert source value to base (e.g. metres for length).
  2. Convert base to target unit.

Example: 5 kilometres → metres = 5 × 1000 = 5000 m → miles = 5000 ÷ 1609.344 ≈ 3.11 mi

Temperature is special

Celsius, Fahrenheit and Kelvin use formulas, not simple factors:

  • °F = (°C × 9/5) + 32
  • K = °C + 273.15

Accuracy tips

  • Use precise conversion constants for engineering work.
  • Watch US vs UK gallons (MerQPrime uses US gallon).
  • Do not convert across categories (length ≠ weight).
